Cokelat hitam sudah lama diketahui manfaatnya bagi kesehatan. Hasil analisa terhadap 20 studi menunjukkan, konsumsi cokelat hitam setiap hari akan menurunkan tekanan darah.
Penelitian yang dilakukan The Cochrane Group melaporkan, zat aktif dalam cokelat bermanfaat untuk membuat pembuluh darah lebih rileks. Akibatnya, tekanan darah pun turun.
Zat aktif yang punya efek positif tersebut adalah flavonol, yang di dalam tubuh akan menghasilkan zat kimia oksida nitrat dan membuat pembuluh darah lemas sehingga darah lebih lancar bersirkulasi.
Analisis yang dibuat tersebut mengombinasikan beberapa penelitian sebelumnya untuk mengetahui ada tidaknya efek cokelat bagi tekanan darah. Cokelat hitam yang dikonsumsi partisipan dalam penelitian itu cukup banyak, antara 3 gram sampai 105 gram setiap hari.
Namun penurunan tekanan darah yang dihasilkan tidak terlalu besar, hanya 2-3 mmHg. Akan tetapi penelitian hanya dilakukan selama dua minggu sehingga tidak diketahui dampaknya dalam jangka panjang.
"Meski kami belum mendapat bukti adanya efek jangka panjang penurunan tekanan darah, tetapi penurunan sedikit dalam jangka pendek ini mungkin dalam jangka panjang bisa berkontribusi pada penurunan risiko penyakit jantung," kata Karin Ried, dari National Institute of Integrative Medicine di Melbourne, Australia.
Tekanan darah tinggi cukup banyak diderita dan diperkirakan menjadi penyebab terbanyak stroke dan penyakit jantung.
Bila Anda ingin mendapatkan manfaat dari cokelat hitam, sebaiknya pastikan produk yang dibeli mengandung cokelat dalam jumlah tinggi karena kebanyakan produk di pasaran lebih banyak kandungan gula dan lemaknya.
Selain cokelat, kacang, aprikot, blackberries, dan apel juga mengandung flavonol meski kadarnya lebih rendah daripada cokelat.
